Brooklyn College is a senior college of the City University of New York, located in Brooklyn, which is New York City's most populous borough, with more than 2 million people, living within its limits.
The college was established in 1930 and traces its roots back to the Downtown Brooklyn branches of Hunter College (then a women's college) and the City College of New York (then a men's college), which merged, thus, Brooklyn College being opened, the first public coeducational liberal arts college in New York City.
It currently offers its students more than 125 undergraduate programs and, at the graduate level, over 100 master's and advanced certificate programs, providing `one of the most outstanding educations in the country.`
Brooklyn's athletic teams are known as the Bulldogs and they compete in NCAA Division III for most sports, with 5 men's and 5 women's sports teams.
Since it first opened its doors to students, Brooklyn has produced numerous notable alumni, among them also being: Jeffrey Laitman - anatomist and physical anthropologist, Distinguished Professor of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, President-Elect of the American Association of Anatomists, Alan M. Dershowitz - Harvard Law School professor and author, and Jerome H. Barkow - Canadian anthropologist at Dalhousie University who has made important contributions to the field of evolutionary psychology.
